About Westfjords

The Westfjords, Iceland's least populated region, is defined by its dramatic landscapes and remote access. The winding roads are a form of endurance test, leading to towering cliffs, deep fjords, and minimal civilization. Dynjandi Waterfall steals the show, cascading down in a series of tiers that make a strong case for hiking up, while the rest of the area offers solitude and a few small towns that may not have much more than a post office. Visitors come largely for the natural scenery and the chance to disconnect from the chaos of modern life, as long as they’re okay with a lack of amenities and the odd sheep blocking the road on the way to their destination.

Who it's for

Ideal for nature lovers and adventurers who enjoy solitude and don't need the comforts of a city. Not suitable for those seeking nightlife, extensive public transport, or five-star dining; this is a place where dining options might include whatever you brought with you.

Getting around

Public transport: Poor

  • Driving is essential; public transport is sparse and unreliable
  • The nearest major city, Reykjavik, is about a four to six-hour drive away
  • Expect to spend a significant amount of time on winding roads to reach attractions
  • Check local conditions before setting out, as weather can be unpredictable
