About Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world, is a geothermal wonderland carved out by volcanic activity. Home to an array of geysers, hot springs, and diverse wildlife, it attracts millions who want to witness natural phenomena like Old Faithful and the mesmerizing Grand Prismatic Spring. The landscapes shift from the dramatic cliffs of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone to the tranquil expanse of Yellowstone Lake. Each of these zones presents its own ecosystem, teeming with bison, elk, and the occasional bear. Despite its vastness, much of the park is only accessible via winding roads, meaning visitors often find themselves in car queues rather than hiking trails, and a good chunk of the experience is spent locating parking rather than exploring the wilds.

Who it's for

Ideal for nature enthusiasts and those interested in geothermal activity. A poor fit for anyone seeking urban comforts or extensive public transport options: getting around often requires a car and patience, as limited public transport won't get you where you need to go very quickly.

Getting around

Public transport: Limited

  • The park covers over 3,400 square miles, so plan on driving between attractions
  • Limited shuttle services operate but are generally not reliable for extensive travel
  • Traffic can be frustrating due to wildlife jams and road construction
  • Be prepared for a significant drive from the nearest airports in Jackson or Bozeman
