What coins are for
Coins are the app's currency. You spend them planning trips and searching what's nearby, and you earn them back through daily quests. Bears are what you spend the surplus on — the part of the economy that exists purely for fun.
Each one is a different side of you
They're not reskins. Each bear maps to a trait from your travel personality, so the ones you unlock first tend to be the ones you already are — and the one you're chasing is usually the traveller you're trying to become.
